Longevity
I've had a lot of people this year talk to me about how to reach the top of our sport, so I thought I'd give my thoughts on the topic. I've been blessed with an incredible ride in powerlifting! World records, pro totals and I even got to hold an all time squat record for a while! So how'd I do it? What would I do differently if I could do it all over? Well that's simple-yet hard! In a nutshell, I'd slow down more! Justin Rogers, my training partner, and I knew when we started the run to the top it would take 2-3 years. We took our time and made little steps until we completed our goal. But even before that, I wish when I 'first' started back to lifting that I would've slowed down! I wish I wouldn't have worried about the numbers or even improving a total, but spending a lot more time in the little things... like my shoulders! Lighter weight: more quality moves! More size! My hips! I hurt them early and they have never been right since! Knowing what I know now, I'd live on the inner/outer thigh machine, lunge more, and so on! I'd work more on my lower back, treating it more like a bodybuilder! Maybe the most over looked part: I'd work like crazy on my low traps and middle back! You've seen us do our "cable-bad deadlift", right? That's what it's about! Taking a bad spot and making it bullet proof! However, the most important thing I would have done is, when something felt wrong and everyone said "power through it...," I'd tell them to freaking jump in the lake! I'd stop what I was doing and move on to something else-protecting myself at all cost! So that's how I try to train the PG people! I work on their weaknesses! We go slow and let them come to the top at their own speed! There's no time limit, so enjoy the ride! Be in this sport forever!! Don't be broke down in 5 years!! Let's have a great 2018. I can't wait to see y'all show off!! And of course, if you need something-ask! We'll help anyway we can!
